Jan 7th - Political Commentary - Government at Work

One of the things we first noticed when we entered the Palm Springs, CA area was the windmills. There are hundreds, if not thousands of them. So far I think I have seen as many as three per hundred actually rotating and presumably generating electricity. These windmills were no doubt only built because politicians forced we taxpayers to co-sign for the billions of dollars borrowed to build them. In addition, the only market for the electricity generated by the wind mills is created by politicians forcing utilities to pay 2 to 3 times the cost of conventionally generated electricity to buy the “green” energy.

Today’s Palm Springs “The Desert Sun” has a front page article about yet another solar company going bankrupt. Politicians forced we taxpayers to co-sign a $2.1 BILLION loan for the company. The article doesn’t say how much this is actually going to cost us.  Can the bozos in DC actually be this stupid or is it just because these companies are stuffing so much money in their pockets that they have been bought?

Also in today’s paper there is a story about a California politician, Mary Hayashi, who stuffed $2,500 worth of clothes in a bag and tried to walk out of Neiman Marcus without paying for them. She got caught and plead no contest. She was sentenced to probation, fined $180 and she can’t go back in the store. Anyone else think that this was just another crooked politician who got off with a slap on the wrist because she is a politician? If you want to read the absolutely bullshit defense check out the story at:

Unemployment is down to 8.5%. The good news is that in spite of the government business has created over 100,000 jobs have been created in each of the past 6 months. The bad news is that part of the reason the unemployment rate dropped is because 50,000 people gave up looking for a job during the previous month. Over the past two years the proportion of adults who are either working, or looking for work, has dropped from 64.6% to 64.0%. If that percentage had not declined the unemployment rate would currently be 9.5%.  Perhaps governments plan is to keep putting more people on welfare until there is no unemployment, because no one wants to work. Obama, oh yeah, he is the guy who told us that if we didn't let him drive the nation into much deeper debt the recession would cause unemployment to rise to almost 9% during 2010. Further if he took no action would not drop below 7% until the start of 2012. With his magnificent TRILLION dollar deficits plan, unemployment would never reach 8% and it would be at 6% by the start of 2012. (If anyone wants to see the chart from a Jan 2009 Obama report I can send you a copy.)

Earlier this week I read an editorial by an Arizona PhD (that means they can pile it higher and deeper). In one breath the guy was complaining that we just had to let more illegals into the country because Arizona farmers had no one to help them. (Arizona's unemployment rate has been higher than the national average.) He gave no reason as to why farmers won't ask for H-2A (agriculture work) visas. All that is required to allow immigrants to come to the US and work legally is:
1. The employer must show that able, willing, and qualified US workers are not available at the time and place needed
2. The employer must show that an adverse effect on wages or working conditions of similarly employed US workers will not result from the employment of foreign workers.

I guess we should not be surprised that politicians are willing to violate the Constitution if it means it might cost them a few votes.
