It is still flurrying snow. Forecast has a chance of snow most days for the rest of the week.
Today we again went to get our Missouri drivers license and to transfer our vehicle registrations to Missouri. I figured it had to go better than the last time.
The drivers licenses were not a problem. One odd thing is that you actually have to wait to get your actual license. They give you an 8.5x11 piece of paper to drive on until they mail you your actual license.
The same building housed the people responsible for the vehicle registrations. We took in the titles and proof of insurance, and we had our "new drivers licenses'. Not enough. We had to go to the county Assessors office and get papers that said we did not owe some type of taxes on the vehicles. Then we had to go have the vehicles inspected. We were in the CR-V. We went to the assessors office and got the paperwork from them. We went to the Honda dealer and paid them $12 to inspect our 2010 CR-V. Then it was back to the license place. Still no go. They would not accept our Tennessee proof of insurance. You have to have a Missouri proof of insurance. I guess you can get some type of temporary insurance even with out-of-state plates. Still no MO plates on either vehicle. The whole thing is a bad joke.
When we transferred our vehicles to Tennessee it took one trip, to one place. When we got our Tennessee drivers license it took one trip to one place.
The TN license plates on our CR-V cost $26/year. We still don't know what they will cost in MO, but we do know that we will have to pay personal property taxes on the CR-V are $245 this year. The taxes on my 2007 truck will be $165/yr. If we transferred our motor home to MO the taxes would be $1,230/yr. Missouri is the land of taxes and regulation! I wonder if traffic deaths in MO are significantly less than TN, because of the vehicle safety inspections. I suspect that it was something that caused dealerships to put a lot of money in politicians pocketbooks so that they could get all the inspection work (and make repairs).
We were going to set up a Missouri savings account, but by the time we got to the bank it had already closed.
I can't wait to see all the baloney that I will have to go through to get my TN carry permit changed to MO. I already know that it will cost at least $130 for the privilege of getting a MO carry permit.
When I get to TN, in the next week or so, I think I am going to go into the courthouse and tell everyone how I enjoyed being a Volunteer. I wonder if I shouldn't send at least a couple of hundred dollars to TN just for the great privilege of being a TN resident for 19 months.
Good evening to all. May God bless you and yours.

Feb 27th - Still Snowing
We received another inch of snow overnight. Currently we are getting flurries, but I doubt that we will get any additional accumulation.
I spent over an hour plowing more of our driveway. I've got the circle drive plowed and don't plan on doing any more. Below is where I drove the tractor through unplowed snow yesterday, and again today, on the way back to the building where I store it. I didn't measure but I'm sure that the wet snow was 12" deep.
The snow curling around the end of the corrugated metal roofing was interesting.
We are about to leave for Jefferson City. We are going to try again to get our MO drivers license. Hopefully it will go much better than the last time.
Have a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Feb 26th - More Snow
More snow yesterday and last night. We received 6-7 inches of new, WET snow. The 6-7 inches of dryer snow we received last week had compacted to 3-4 inches, but not much had melted.
This was the view when I went out and filled the furnace with wood this morning.
It took me about three hours to clean our driveway this afternoon. I'm confident that we can get out in the CR-V, out to the road. I'm not sure that my truck will make it out, but we don't have to get it out.
We are supposed to get another 1-2" of snow tonight.
Our power flicked off several times between 6AM and 9AM. It would come back on almost immediately, up until just after 9AM. That time it went off and stayed off until 5:50PM. Mid-afternoon Kathy turned on one of our gas fireplaces and it never got below 70 in the house. Last nights overnight low was 34 and todays high was 36. There was no wind today.
Good night to all. May God bless you and yours.

Feb 21st - Bath Time & Snow
Bath time at Grammy's is so much fun. Getting ready to go to church with Daddy last night. Daddy was an usher.
Elaine made it here from Collins, IA with no problems. See arrived a little after 10 PM last night.
We counted as many as 7 male cardinals at the feeder, or in the tree next to the feeder, around 8 AM this morning. The snow had just started.
It was snowing quite hard by 9 AM. View out back.
Looking at where our driveway goes up through the trees.
This was the scene at 1:45. At this time we had 5-7" of snow. Most places measured 6-7". Right after I took this photo it started sleeting, but so far not much more accumulation.
We haven't even started a vehicle this morning, no reason to get out on the roads. Actually I wonder if I can actually plow the drive so that we have a chance to get up to the road. This is our second significant snowfall. We had less snow during the first one, but it was wetter.
During the first snow I managed to get to the top of the drive the first time I tried, with our 4WD tractor. As soon as I started trying to push the snow it was all over. I never made it to the top of the drive again. With this dryer snow I might be able to push it because the asphalt might not be as slippery. The forecast high for the day is 27 while tonights low is supposed to be 24.
Hope you all are having a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Feb 20th - We Are Still Alive and Kicking
I haven't posted in over a week now. Haven't had much to say and have had a head cold. I'm not sure how I caught the cold but I'm sure glad I'm finally getting over it. I didn't do much the last half of last week nor so far this week.
I did manage to run a couple of tanks of gas through the weed eater Tuesday, Feb 12th. Kathy said this stuff is "ornamental grass". It was to heavy to cut efficiently with my weed eater, but I finally got it whacked down. It is now on a burn pile out back, waiting to be burned. I need to get a real weed eater.
Lydia was a hoot when she was here that afternoon.
The Cheez-It box and the roll of blue tape were some of her favorite toys for the afternoon. She thought the "hat" was fun, for awhile.
This is her shredding some tissue paper that was used to wrap some stuff that was in the "hat". She thought tearing the paper into pieces was great fun. Andy, her Dad, ended up picking up most of the pieces.
Thursday evening the Baptist church we have been attending had a Valentines Day dinner at the restaurant in Centertown. We attended and had an enjoyable evening, but I was pooped by the time I got home.
I think it was Thursday that Andy and Kelsey took one of our couches to the Habitat Re-Store and picked up a dresser that Kathy had purchased for the downstairs bedroom. A big thank you to them because I sure didn't feel like doing it.
Kathy volunteered at the Re-Store on Friday but I stayed home. About the only time I went out of the house for a week was once in the morning and once in the evening, to throw wood in the wood furnace. Kathy did that three of the times.
We both did make it to church on Sunday. Still no permanent Pastor. We had heard the guy who was there Sunday preach previously, he is a lay person. He was good then and good again last Sunday. The lady who plays the piano is having surgery tomorrow. Kathy will be playing the piano for the next couple of weeks.
Monday was one of two days when the Ott family butchered hogs. I think they did two on Saturday and another two when we were there on Monday. Below is Andy's brother Butch, his Uncle Palmer, and his brother-in-law Rick. You can see a little of Andy over Rick's shoulder. Andy was cutting up fat for lard.
Andy's Dad, David, and Butch. They took turns running the band saw.
It was cool and windy that day, and it was sprinkling by the time we left. Palmer walked us around to look at some of the equipment, in particular his new CAT dozer (actually used, but it looked almost new). We all stood around the fire for awhile while David stirred the fat in a huge kettle. I forgot to take a photo of it.
The ladies were inside the house packaging the meat and grinding and stuffing sausage. The inside of the house was a VERY busy place. I also forgot to take a photo of them in action.
If I heard Rick correctly, last year the only butchered hogs on one day, but they did seven hogs.
Yesterday I spent about an hour on the phone with GMAC insurance. We have had our motor home insured through them since we purchased it in 2009, they had the best rates when we first insured it with them. I had put the motor home "in storage" when I came back from TX. When it is in storage we only pay for comprehensive insurance. I called them to take it out of "storage" and found out things were a mess. The motor home is owned by a Montana LLC that is wholly owned by Kathy. (saved us about $7,000 in taxes when we bought it, it is all perfectly legal). It must be insured in the state where it is licensed. Somehow, probably when we changed our residency, and mailing address, from Indiana to Tennessee, the GMAC people assumed the motor home was licensed in TN. They are supposed to be RV insurers but it appears that only a few of them are smart enough to understand that RV'ers are not always residents of where their RV's are licensed. Once I finally go to the right person it was no hassle, other than price. This is hard to believe but, insuring the motor home in MT cost 28% more than insuring it if it was licensed in TN, about $600/year more. In 2009, when we first insured it, the cost was less than $800/yr, and it was insured as being licensed in MT. I remember this because I was stunned that it cost less to insure the motor home than it did my pickup. 3 1/2 years later the cost has increased to $1238/year. I have things all straightened out but now I need to do some MT insurance shopping. Because a lot of people license their RV's in MT it is fairly easy to find insurance companies up there. Hope I can find one that hasn't increased their rates so dramatically over the past 3 years.
Today we went in to get our Missouri drivers license and to transfer the plates on our car and truck from TN to MO. Since MO had a personal property tax on vehicles there is no way I'm licensing the motor home here. Have I previously mentioned how fond I am of the government? NOT!!!!
Kathy thought we needed to go to the Cole County courthouse. We parked, fed the parking meter and went in. You have to go down into the basement and go through security. It is as big a joke as in Michigan. The bureaucrats are scared to death of the people. I had to take my pocket knife back out to my truck. I came back in and finally cleared security. (I thought maybe I would have to be strip searched since my suspenders kept setting the thing off.) After getting through we found out that we were in the wrong place. The security guy sent us to another huge government building 8 blocks away. (For those of you who live in Crossville, TN you can thank your lucky stars that the folks who work in the courthouse there are actually glad to see you when you come to do business. They don't think you are there to murder them with your pocket knife.)
At the next place we drove around for 15 minutes and could not find a place to park that was even remotely close to the place. The place had two large parking lots. (My guess is that if half the bureaucrats who worked there were fired tomorrow, 95% of us would never notice the difference.) We gave up, I was agitated enough by then that I'm sure if someone had thrown water on me it would have turned to steam.
We went over to a used furniture store where Kathy had purchased a couch last week. She had not wanted to get it earlier because of the guy doing the drywall and painting work in the living room and dining room. We picked it up and the lady told us that we still had not gone to the correct place. She directed us to the correct place. When we got there we found out that passports were not enough identification. We also needed "approved" paperwork that showed we had a MO mailing address. SCREW IT, I'M STAYING A TENNESSEE RESIDENT! (Probably not, but I am until after I get back from TN next month.)
Elaine Anderson is coming down from Collins, IA today. She will be here visiting for several days. She is a good friend from the days we lived in Maxwell, IA (1977-80). It will be good to get to spend some time with her. We parked the motor home at her place a couple of nights when we were on our way from the west coast back to MO last summer.
Next Monday, the 25th, or maybe Tuesday, I plan on heading to TN in the motor home. I intend on staying for around a month. I want to work on our building there.
I've been working on some home plans for our son Drew, in Oakland. The city has decided that the guy who owned the place before Drew purchased it in Jan 2012 didn't get a building permits when he built the "sun room" when the guy built it many years ago. Drew is now faced with huge fines for Building Code violations. He is trying to get them to accept a "retroactive" application. It is still going to cost him a chunk of money before he gets things straightened out. It's the government and even worse the government in California, need I say more.
Guess that is enough of a book for now. Have a good day. May God bless you and yours.
PS. If you haven't watched Dr. Benjamin Carson speaking at the DC Prayer Breakfast a few weeks ago please take some time and do so.

I've also watched him make other speeches, and also on John Stossel's program. This guy makes a lot of sense and seems to be a great man.

Feb 12th - Cool Day
It cooled of significantly today. Yesterday the high was over 50 and today it was in the 30's. Still not bad for mid-Feb.
Monday we cut up some wood that was already down. It was just some of the trees that have been cut down in the past and left lying. We cut up enough to last 3 or 4 days.
Today we didn't do much. This morning we went to California. I dropped off a couple of chainsaw chains for sharpening, at the hardware store. I also bought a new chain. the more I'm here the more need I see for one of the walk behind brush mowers. There are just a lot of areas that are inaccessible even with a 4' brush hog. My yen for one was seriously dampened when I saw how much they actually cost. The hardware store rents them for $50/day. After it warms up, and dries out more (not that it is to wet) I may see if I can get Andy to come over and help me some day. I will rent one for the day and we can take turns mowing with it.
Kathy went to the Flea Market (Antique Store) and found a bowl to replace one that had been broken. We also filled up the car and bought a gallon of non-ethanol gas to use in the chainsaw and weed eater.
Lydia came this afternoon. She still has a cold but seemed to feel reasonably OK. We had a good time with her.
I sent Elaine (a friend from when we lived in Iowa in the late 70's) some map information today. She is coming for a visit next week. We are looking forward to it. On our way from the west coast to Missouri last summer we parked the motor home at here place a couple of days and had a good visit.
Time to get to bed. Hope all of you had a good day. May God bless you an yours.

Feb 10th - OK
We are fine. We have not dropped off the face of the earth, just not a lot going on.
Friday afternoon we volunteered at the Habitat Re-Store again. It was probably the slowest day we guys in the shipping/receiving area have had while I have been there. Kathy was fairly busy on the "sales floor" but not many large items sold.
After the Re-Store we had dinner with Andy, Kelsey & Lydia at the newer oriental buffet. Saturday the guy who is doing some drywall work and painting came out and worked all day. He primed and painted the ceiling in the downstairs bedroom, the one that had water damage from the leaking ice maker in our 2nd new refrigerator. He also tore out the bad tape, and re-taped joints in the ceiling of the living room. He is coming back next Saturday to paint the living room and dining room.
This morning we went to Sunday School and church. Kathy played the piano at church for the first time, the normal piano player is in Florida visiting relatives.
Today's high was in the low 60's. I filled the furnace with wood last night and it still had plenty of wood this morning. I did put in a few sticks this afternoon but I think there was still enough wood to last through tonight.
We had some more rain yesterday and last night, maybe a half inch. I couldn't see that the pond was any higher than it was after the last rain.
Lydia has a cold. Kathy texted with Kelsey a few minutes ago and she was putting Vicks on Lydia. Hope she doesn't have the flu, or whooping cough. She is supposed to come here Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Have a good evening. May God bless you and yours.

Feb 4th - WARM
Highs were in the mid 50's today, and it is supposed to stay that warm for the next week. Lows are to be down near, or slightly below, freezing.
Sunday we went to church. I didn't do much the rest of the day. Today I had a "get acquainted" meeting with an Endocrinologist in Jefferson City. Nothing special, it was just a meeting to start the process of changing diabetes doctors from Indianapolis to here. I'm going back in tomorrow morning to have blood drawn for some lab work. My initial impressions of both the local doctors I've seen are positive.
This morning I cut up another bucket full of trashy oak. That pretty much cleaned up the trash from the tree I cut down last fall.
Tomorrow Lydia is coming for the afternoon.
Good night to all, may God bless you and yours.

This morning I cut up another bucket full of trashy oak. That pretty much cleaned up the trash from the tree I cut down last fall.
Tomorrow Lydia is coming for the afternoon.
Good night to all, may God bless you and yours.

Feb 2nd - Habitat Re-Store Yesterday
Yesterday was our afternoon to volunteer at the Habitat Re-Store. We were reasonably busy. We loading dock guys loaded 3 refrigerators, a stove, a dishwasher, maybe 5 couches (man those hide-a-beds are heavy), several chairs and a bunch of other misc furniture. I think I heard someone say that the store sold $1,800 worth of stuff yesterday. That was far from the busiest day that they have had when we volunteered, but it wasn't bad.
After "work" we stopped at Chili's for supper. It never ceases to amaze me at how how busy restaurants are on Friday nights. If you don't get in and seated before 5:30 on Friday night, I don't care where you go, you are going to have to wait a long time to get seated. We get off "work" at 5 and we went straight to Chili's. By the time we left we about had to fight our way out of the place, because there were so many people waiting to get a table.
This morning I hauled a bucket (the bucket on my tractor) full of good wood, from out back, down to the boiler. It was some Hedge that I had split a few days ago. Then I dug out more chunks, split another bucket full, and hauled it to the boiler. This stuff splits hard. I gave up on one old forked piece. I managed to split a couple of small pieces off it but I could not get the rest of it split into pieces that would fit in the boiler. I had to put it aside and wait until I get my splitter back.
About 11 this morning Kathy picked up Lydia, so that Kelsey could get a little more sleep before going to work today. Andy worked today. He stopped by on his way home to pick her up, and have supper. We sure enjoy having her.
In the afternoon I fired up my chain saw for the first time since I got back from TX. I cut up some of the "trash" that was left over from when I cut down the oak tree last fall. Enough to fill the bucket. The 3 buckets full that I hauled over to the splitter will probably last 3 days.
Kathy just went out to climb in the hot tub. The temperature is 32 degrees. She really enjoys the thing, and I'm glad. She has been out when it was even colder. I just can't imagine going outside in freezing weather, climbing into 95 degree water, sitting in it for 20-30 minutes and then CRAWLING OUT IN FREEZING TEMPS!
Good night to all. May God bless you and yours.
