Jan 31st - Kathy's Home

Kathy made it home from Indiana. Good to have her home. I think she had a good time back with the girls from Teen Challenge, of course none of the girls who were there when she left are still there. She got to spend a week whipping a whole new batch in to shape <grin>.

Kelsey and Lydia came over and then Andy came over after he got off work. We had a nice evening.

We had record highs for two days but now normal winter temperatures are back. Tonight's low is forecast to be 7 degrees. If that happens it will be the coldest night of the winter. So far single digit lows have been forecast several times but about the lowest I've noticed is low teens.

After the rain our pond is as high as I've ever seen it. The 1.5-2 inches of rain caused the level to go up by around a foot. It still needs to raise by another 18" before it is close to being full.

Not much going on, just lazing about.

Hope you all have a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 28th - WARM!!

According to the thermometer on our front porch today's high was at least 78. It isn't to often that I wear shorts in January. This afternoon I set out on the porch in shorts and a tee shirt. I even took the tee shirt off for some of  the time, just to warm.

Temps are falling. It is still going to be warm tomorrow but temps are supposed to continue to drop until we reach a low 11 degrees Thursday night.

The normal average heating degree days through the end of January is 3162 for our area. So far this heating season we have only had 2627.

Hope you all had a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 27th - Some Needed Rain (Drizzle)

We got slightly over a tenth of an inch of rain during the night and morning. It sure would be nice to get more.

Kelsey, Andy & Lydia came over yesterday evening. When they came in they mentioned something about my fire. I thought the boiler must be firing and that they were commenting on the smoke from it. As we started eating Andy asked me what I had been burning during the day. I had not been burning anything. We all looked out the front windows and saw 3' flames on the side on one of our buildings. YIKES!!!

I connected the hose to one the frost proof hydrants and turned it on. Fortunately it was warm enough that if there had been ice in the hose it had melted during the day. (A good reason to make sure the hoses are properly drained before putting them away again.) Andy dragged some boards that were on fire away from the building and I sprayed water on the fire. The flames were gone pretty quick but getting the coals put out was more difficult. I sprayed the heck out of everything and yet when I went back out to check an hour later there were still a few hot coals in one area. I sprayed them again. An hour later, when I checked again, I didn't see any hot spots.

The problem was caused by my dumping some hot ashes on the ash pile. Usually there aren't many hot coals in the ashes but when I cleaned out the ashes during the afternoon there were a lot of them. I thought that maybe the combustion blower had just run so everything was still "hot." I tried to be careful and dump the buckets of ashes directly on top of the pile of old ashes. Apparently enough of the hot coals came in contact with some leaves and set the leaves on fire. The fire tracked up to some boards that were piled along side the building and set the boards on fire. It is amazing that the old wood siding on the building didn't catch fire. The only damage to it appears to be a little scorching.

This was a huge Praise the Lord event. If Kelsey and Andy had not decided to come over for the evening I would never have noticed the fire until it was much worse. As it ended up it was just a learning experience. One of the other times emptied the ashes I left them in a metal bucket overnight. The next morning the ashes had drawn enough moisture so that they stuck to the bottom of the bucket and were a little difficult to get out of the bucket. That was one of the reasons I didn't do the same with yesterday's ashes. In the future I won't mind having to knock some stuck ashes out of the bucket.

Have a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 26th - Feeling Better

I got out this morning and went to Dudley's, a Mom & Pop restaurant on the way to Jefferson City, for breakfast. It was great feeling good enough to want to get out and do something. I also picked up a couple of prescription renewals while I was out.

Came home, washed some dirty pots and pans (didn't have many), and have a second load of laundry in the washer.

Doing some Net surfing now, digging up some data for posts to my political blog.

Jan 25th - Not Much to Report

Nothing much happening here. Kathy is still in Lebanon, volunteering at Teen Challenge. She plans on being home by next Wednesday.

I've been "puny" since Saturday afternoon. Hopefully I'm on the mend. All I did the past two days was go out and add wood to the boiler in the morning and again in the afternoon. Not sure what is wrong with me. Originally I thought I might have a touch of food poisoning but it has lasted to long for that. Perhaps it is a touch of the flu. In any case I think I am on the mend.

Weather looks beautiful today. We are supposed to have two days in the 60's next week. That will be nice.

Have a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 22nd - I Could Just Puke!

I am so sick and tired of all the inauguration coverage that I could just about puke. I can't stand to watch the laying scum we have for a president, nor the dope we have for a vice-president.

These two pieces of crap get up on national TV, at least I assume they did, I couldn't stand to watch; and take an oath of office to uphold the Constitution while they both know they aren't going to do it. Their refusal to enforce immigration laws proves them to be liars who are without a shred of integrity.

Oath of Office
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Jan 19th - Sunrise

Sunrise Saturday morning.
The sun is just peeking over the hilltop in this photo. Our main floor level is probably about 50 feet down from the top of the hill, and at least 100 feet above the "valley" behind us. Our sunrise is about 10 minutes late while we wait for the sun to get high enough to get over the hill top.

Our weather has been mild enough that we have went through two days and two nights burning only trash wood that I found, and split, out back. Some of the stuff I've been burning is worse that the stuff I burned on the burn pile during the summer, but there is still plenty to get rid of. I've split up another 3-4 buckets full. I left it where I split it still have to move it from the back up to the boiler. (I love my tractor <grin>)

Today's high is supposed to be 58 and then the weather turns colder, down to a low of 8 forecast for Monday night. If we get into single digits it will be the coldest night of this winter. I won't be burning much trash wood that night.

Yesterday was our volunteer afternoon at the Habitat Re-Store. Nothing to exciting. We, those of us on the "loading dock" were reasonably busy, but not as busy as we had been the past two weeks. After taking some things back to the scrap metal pile, and having to walk across a section of ice covered concrete to get to the pile, I spent about an hour chipping away ice. The area is all concrete but the sun only hits the "working" side of the building briefly. There was over an inch of ice where one of the corner downspouts weeps water onto the concrete. The ice extended for about 40' away from the building. A lot of it was "rotten" and wasn't to hard to break up, some of it was still pretty solid. With the warm temps today everything should dry out until we get more precipitation. Last week the transmission went out the Habitat truck, $1,700. I saw there electric bill, for the Re-Store complex, $700 for last month (electric heat). They do have expenses to keep the place going even though almost all the labor is volunteer.

Today Kathy leaves for Lebanon. She is going back to volunteer at Teen Challenge for a week or so. They are short on staff right now so she volunteered to go there and help them out.

I plan on going to the pro 2nd Amendment rally at the capital today. Over 600 people have said they were going to attend and another 400 said they might attend. Not to bad since there has been virtually no publicity. I found out from my brother in Michigan.

Hope you all have/had a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 16th - Cool

Depending on which thermometer you believe we may have had our coldest night of the year last night. About 7:30 AM the thermometer on our front porch said it was 10 degrees. The official overnight low was 15. Usually there isn't that much difference between our front porch thermometer and the "official" one. It is supposed to warm up for the next couple of days. Lows are supposed to be 25 tonight and then 24, 32, 22 & 18 for the next several nights.

After a week or so I finally put up the $35 medicine cabinet we got at the Habitat Re-Store. None of the bathrooms in this house had a medicine cabinet. This is in the master bath. There was a 3'x4' mirror above the sink. The dark border around the medicine cabinet was under the mirror and needs to be painted to match the remainder of the wall, or the entire wall/bathroom needs to be repainted.

Yesterday morning I went out and split a bucket full of wood. A bucket full of  the junk wood will do two morning fills, and last until time to fill the boiler again in the evening. The tree branches were still icy. They made a pretty sight with the sun reflecting through the ice. We didn't get enough ice to be a bother to us. Our vehicles had a fair amount on them, but that wasn't a problem. We haven't started either one since Saturday. I think both are now almost ice free.

Almost an angel. Lydia napping on Kathy's lap yesterday evening. She took a long nap after after lunch but played hard all afternoon.

I think I will go out and split another one or two buckets of junk wood today. I'm still working on getting as much as possible of the junk wood burned before winter ends. It doesn't have enough BTU value to hold a fire overnight when it is cold, so I've only been burning it during the day. With the warmer weather that we are supposed to have the next couple of days I might try at least a 50/50 mix of good/junk wood overnight.

Hope you all have/had a great day. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 12th - Warm Weather Over

I think our warm weather is over for awhile. Yesterday's high was well into the 60's. Today's high was 58, but that was at midnight last night. The temperature has dropped since then. Current temp is 39 at 4 PM. Tomorrow's high is forecast to be be only 25.

Yesterday was our volunteer day at the Habitat Re-Store. It was pretty normal. When we were in Columbia a couple of days ago Kathy found an area rug for the living room, one that she liked better than the current one which she had purchased for $20.
We took the $20 one into Habit and donated it. The guys put an $80 price tag on it, which Kathy thought was way to high. We had not been open 30 minutes when a lady bought it.

The Re-store closes at 5. After "work" we stopped at Menard's. We had planned on using one of the gift certificates we have to have supper at either Longhorn or Chili's, for supper. We walked in to Longhorn and the lady told us the wait was 30 minutes. There are only two restaurants in the US where I would wait 30 minutes for a seat. One is the Beefhouse on the Indiana Illinois state line. The other is the Demo's in either Nashville or Lebanon, Tennessee.

I had to take a long break. It is now almost 6PM. Lydia was helping me type and I finally had to just let her take control.

Kelsey came over around 10 this morning and Andy came a few hours later. They just left. It has been raining here and the rain is now turning to ice. They thought they better get going while they could still get up our driveway. Kathy thought it looked like Kelsey's car slipped backward some when she stopped before turning onto the road.

Kathy went to Jeff this morning and bought a lot of groceries. We don't have to worry about having to get out unless we want to.

Time to go watch the end of the Bronco's game.

Good night to all. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 10th - A Couple of Photos

Nothing much going on here. We did get a little rain today. Yesterday's high was around 60, today's was 50 and tomorrow's is supposed to be 67. Maybe global warming isn't all that bad.

Yesterday's stroller ride. Lydia must think her hat is an eye patch.

Todays' bathtime is lots of fun.

She just can't help being so cute.

Have a great evening. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 6th - Sunday

Nothing exciting happening today. We went to Sunday School and Church this morning. They had a guest Pastor speak again. They are searching for a permanent Pastor. I've heard this guy twice now and I just can't see him making it as a pulpit preaching Pastor. He might be okay in a one on one setting, but neither Kathy or I can follow his messages. He hasn't said anything we think is wrong, its just that his messages don't seem to flow to a conclusion.

I finally found a work around for posting photos. It seems that either blogger or Internet Explorer has changed something and now they won't "talk" to one another when trying to upload a photo.

This is the wood I split, by hand yesterday. We still have plenty of split wood, probably enough to last through next winter. I just need some exercise and it is a good way to get rid of some wood that I probably would have burned on a burn pile during the summer. It is fine for burning during the day, when I can add would a couple of times if I need to. Actually some of this is good stuff, suitable for keeping a fire all night long.

After I filled the boiler the other morning the combustion fan started running and this was the result. As you can see, there wasn't any wind.

Andy took this photo a few nights ago. Lydia has been working on crawling up into the bottom of the entertainment center (bookcase) for a few days. This was the first time she made it all the way in.

Have a good evening. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 5th - More Wood Splitting

Still can't post photos, and can't figure out why.

I didn't do much today, other than split 3 buckets full of wood to get in some cardio exercise. Things are starting to get muddy here as the daytime highs are increasing.

Kelsey worked from 7 PM last night to 7 AM this morning. Andy wanted to go coyote hunting, with his brother, this morning. Kathy left home about 6 AM and went over to stay with Lydia until Kelsey got home.

Have a great evening. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 4th - Habitat Day

I still can't upload photos.

Last nights low was 17 but it got up to a sunny 39 this afternoon. Not much wind as you can see in the photo below.

Today was our volunteer day at Habitat. Kathy had an appointment with her Rheumatologist this morning. We had lunch at McDonalds and then, after a stop at Menards, we went to Habitat.

It was busy again today. Today was interesting because we had a whacko couple come in. I didn't see the guy but I helped load a dryer into the woman's SUV. She was a real piece of work. She acted like she was drunk, but I didn't smell booze (drugs?). Kathy saw the whole episode. One of the great things about the used appliances sold is that they are checked out by volunteer appliance repair guys and purchasers are given a 30 day warranty. The guy wanted the Habitat sales person (another volunteer) to hook up a washer and run it to make sure it would work. The volunteer told him that it wasn't necessary because the washer had already been checked out. The guy then called him an asshole and then the guy really started on a tirade. The salesperson just happened to be one of the Habitat managers. He politely asked the guy to leave the store, and then told him to leave. The guy did leave but not until he had harassed another volunteer.

The woman ended up buying a dryer. Something happened when she was paying for it and she went off on a tirade. (The lady up front, who collects the money, seems to me to be one of the meekest people I've ever met.) I work mostly at the receiving/loading dock area. One of the other managers told us that the lady was coming back to pick up the dryer. He told us to be sure to get him when she got to the dock because he wanted to be the one who dealt with her. I was stunned by the way the woman was still mouthing off when she arrived at the dock. We got the dryer loaded and she left. Hope I never see either of them again.

We may have to stop volunteering, we can't afford it <grin>. Today we bought $95.00 worth of stuff. A new medicine chest, a couple of shadow boxes, a small end table, an ironing board, and a Tweetybird cookie jar.  Everything was priced so that it was a good deal. The brand new oak (actually it is particle board that looks like oak) 48" wide medicine chest cost us $35.

We still had enough money to stop at Longhorn's for supper. The meal was good, as was the service. We were seated on arrival. By the time we left there were people standing everywhere waiting to get in.

Have a good evening. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 3rd - Tires & Wood Splitting

Can't get photos to upload, will edit this as soon as I can get them to upload.

This morning I got some cardio exercise splitting some wood by hand.  Steve still has my wood splitter. I'm in no hurry to get it back. This is 3 buckets full in my tractor.

I haven't started my chainsaw since I've been back in Missouri, no need. I've split 7 or 8 bucketfuls and have seen enough chunks of wood around the property, already cut to length, that I could probably find enough for at least another half a cord.

This afternoon I went to Nathan's Tire Shop and had a new set of Yokohoma tires installed on the CR-V. So far, only 8 miles of smooth road, I'm well pleased.

Andy took this photo last night. This was the first time that Lydia actually crawled up into the bookcase. She has thought about getting in there before, but never actually crawled completely up. She is SO CUTE, not that I might be biased.

Good evening to all. May God bless you and yours.

Jan 2nd - Tire Shopping

I hope all of you have a Happy New Year.

Last night was our coldest night so far this season. The overnight low was 7 degrees. Today’s high was 34, I think yesterday’s high was about the same. I’m pleased with our wood fired boiler. I loaded it up a little after 5 yesterday evening. When I checked it around 8:30 this morning there were still plenty of coals to fire a new batch of wood. I’ve been burning mostly junk wood during the day and the good stuff at night. Based on what I’ve seen so far a lot of the trashy wood I burned, in burn piles last summer, would probably have been fine for daytime use. Live and learn.

We have used our vent free gas fireplaces, we have one on both levels, a few times. We only used them when it was to warm to bother with lighting, or keeping a fire going in, the wood boiler. Last night we left the thermostat set on 72 degrees overnight, much higher than we ever did in Indiana. Before the heating season started  I thought we might burn 10-12 cords of wood during the heating season. I’m now guessing 10-11 cords. Obviously it depends on how many heating degree days we have during the remainder of the winter (and how much more trash wood I burn in the boiler). So far this year we have experienced 2,000 heating degree days, about 87% of normal for this time of the year. Must be global warming <grin>. Several times the news has reported that 2012 was the hottest year on record since 1938. Who would have thought that man would have created so many carbon emissions in the 30's that 1938 that it would have been the hottest year until now?

The original tires on our CR-V are already worn out. They have been the worst set of tires I have had in years, in terms of tire life. The CR-V odometer doesn’t register miles when we are towing it behind the motor home. I’m guessing that we got no more than 30,000 miles on the original tires. I don’t know the brand. Today I went over to Nathan’s Tire, in California, MO, to price tires. Andy,  my grandson, recommended the place. They priced a couple of different sets for me. I plan on going back over in the morning and having them install a set of Yokohama AVID Ascend tires. $584 for an installed set of tires that are rated 740 A A. The guy said they should go 80,000 miles. They have “orange oil” technology. Some extract from orange peels is used to replace part of the petroleum in the tires. It supposedly allows the tires to act as a “hard rubber” compound during normal highway driving but when you start cornering the tire surface heats up and gets “sticky.” If interested you can read more about them at http://tires.about.com/od/Tire_Reviews/fr/Review-Yokohama-Avid-Ascend.htm

Lydia is over this afternoon. She is such a sweetie.

Grammy has just been singing to her.
